There is no debating that cleansing is a skincare MUST! But should a rinse and repeat step be added to this essential part of your skincare routine? Double cleansing has become a trending topic in recent years and while the process has been praised for helping achieve clearer skin for some, double cleansing is definitely not for everyone.
What Is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing is the act of washing your face either with the same, or two different types of cleansers. For two different cleansers, often an oil based cleanser is followed by a water based cleanser. The oil based cleanser is used first, and can be great at breaking down and dissolving makeup, SPF, and getting rid of excess oils and dirt on the skin. That cleanse is followed up by a water based cleanser to hydrate, treat acne, and remove any remaining debris. Many also double cleanse with the same cleanser rather than two different ones, to ensure a clean and fresh face.
Like many new skincare trends gaining popularity nowadays, double cleansing originated from Korean beauty. It’s been practiced for many years but has gained major popularity all over the world because of social media.
The Pros
Double cleansing can have its benefits, with an obvious one being clean skin. Double cleansing can help deeply penetrate skin and remove those stubborn impurities like sweat, dead skin, bacteria, and excess oil that can clog pores and cause acne. By unclogging pores, this method can also be great at minimizing their appearance. This method can also help speed up the regeneration process of new healthy skin cells by thoroughly removing dead skin cells that might be left behind after the first wash. Plus, if you haven’t converted into a skinimalist yet and are still a fan of layering products, double cleansing might have you jumping for joy. Because this method removes a barrier of oils and dirt from your skin leaves, it could help other products absorb better into your face which can be a plus if you love a lengthy routine.
The Cons
With all that cleansing it’s no surprise that this method can lead to dryness in the skin. Double cleansing can strip your skin of natural oils which may leave your skin feeling tight and dry. The additional amount of washing can also cause irritation to your skin. Double cleansing can disturb your skin’s natural barrier leaving it more sensitive which is never fun 🙅♀️. Although the oils in the oil cleanser are used to break down gunk in your pores, oils can be comedogenic, meaning it's a pore clogger and can actually increase acne! This routine is not recommended for those with dry skin, acne, or sensitive skin as it can amplify those issues in skin.
If you think an additional step in your skincare routine is already too much, double cleansing is simply not for you. Double cleansing is usually followed by many other steps within a 8 to 10 step skincare routine in order to replenish the skin. For those that don’t have the time, stick a two step routine with Koope products that have all the ingredients your skin needs to flourish.
Should You Try It?
Double cleansing is not a necessary step you need to add to your routine. If you have a quality cleanser with great ingredients, like our Koope Gel Cleanser or Milk Cleanser, your skin can get fresh and clean after one simple wash. This method is only recommended to try if you are wearing heavy amounts of makeup or have very oily skin. You can also always use Koope cleansers in a double cleanse routine. With all other skin types, it is recommended to stick to washing your face once as this method can be harsh on skin. As with all trends, be sure to consult your dermatologist and follow their recommendation for what is best for your skin.
